This
page and the other pages in this series are the successors to the series
of web-page about the Camden Fire Department called Camden
Fire Department: The Fires of the Summer of 2011. On this and other
pages in the series you will find pictures and information regarding
different events and aspects of the fire service in Camden, New
Jersey.
A
busy Sunday afternoon for the Camden Fire Department, although happily
enough, not much in the way of damage to property and no injuries to
people. A call came out mid-afternoon regarding a building fire on
Kaighn Avenue at Mount Ephraim Avenue. Apparently the resident of 1060
Kaighn Avenue, five doors sown from the corner, had been getting
his electricity from a gasoline powered generator, which had
malfunctioned. He brought it into his apartment to repair it, with
gasoline still inside, the very definition of a Bad Idea. Luckily
enough, Squad Company 7 is located less than 100 yards away, at 1115
Kaighn Avenue, and this was taken care of promptly. There was a great
deal of smoke damage in the interior of the property, however.
I
arrived on scene as Squad 7 was wrapping up, took a few pictures, and
drove over to the East Camden firehouse, as I had received a message
from Camden Firefighter James Delgado, who had found the marble
dedication plaque for that building, dated 1899, in the firehouse
basement. When the building was modernized many years and, and powered
overhead doors installed, the plaque had been dismounted and had never
been rehung. Needless to say, I was quite eager to photograph it.
After
taking the pictures of the plaque, I was shooting the breeze with James
and Charles Forker, when a call came about a building fire at Route 130
and Myrtle Avenue. Away we went, me of course with camera in hand. This
turned out to be a small trash fire at 4545 Crescent Boulevard (aka
Route 130 South), which was quickly dispensed with. Ladder 3 was then
sent on an EMS assignment to the 2800 block of Tyler Avenue in Cramer
Hill, where I took a few more pictures. After that it was time to call
it an afternoon for me, dogs to walk and dinner to eat. Little did I
know that I would be back to Camden that night for working fire at the
old Coriell Institute complex on Davis Street.
