CHASE STREET runs east from Mount Ephraim Avenue for three blocks, crossing Louis Street and Norris Street before ending at Pershing Street. The street did not exist prior to 1900, and did not appear in City Directories as late as 1899. Sanborn maps from 1906 show no buildings of any kind on Chase Street. Houses began being built on Chase street in 1913 in the 1100 block close to Mount Ephraim Avenue and progressed eastward, the last home known as of this writing to have been built went up in 1930. There is one commercial building on the street at 1166 Chase Street, which may have pre-dated the residential construction however. Thaddeus Borz Sr. began operating his Wood Specialty Manufacturing Company millwork business at that location in 1919. The business remained in his family into the 1960s. Another firm, Buy-Rite Millwork, operated at this location in the 1970s and 1980s. The building is in private hands today. In the mid-1980s, when crack cocaine came to Camden, the intersection of Louis Street and Chase Street became a notorious drug corner. In January of 1991 a man was shot to death in the doorway of the Time and Place Lounge, located on the northwest corner. The bar was closed permanently a few years after that incident. |

WOMAN AND 2 MEN SEIZED IN NUMBERS Two men and a woman were arrested and numbers slips representing play of $138 were seized in a raid on a house at 1039 Jackson Street yesterday. All were charged with violating the State Crimes Act pertaining to gambling. The raid was made by City Detectives Thomas Murphy, Jr., and Gustav Koerner and Policemen James McLaughlin and Raymond Carson. Besides the slips, the detectives seized $52.97 in money lying on a table. Murphy said he and Koerner have been watching, the place for several days and raided it today when they saw several persons enter. 1990s-2009 The sturdy brick building which graces the corner of Chase and Norris Street bears the sign, "Whitman Park Community Center" Early in 2009 the non-profit organization experienced some outstanding debts that closed the center for several months. Members working with acting president DeLois McEady, Ms. Louise Dobbs, Ali Sloan-El, and Brenda Barnes were working to bring the Center back to life, however, the building was still closed in the fall of 2010. Around 1989, a group of residents led by the late James E. Dobbs and his wife former councilwoman, Louise Dobbs took the empty house with a storefront and created a gathering place for United Neighbors of Whitman Park and its many activities. With help from the City, their dream became reality. The enthusiastic membership sought to do more for the youth of the neighborhood and to have a place for meetings and events. By 2000 the membership reached 122 residents. In June of 2004, Mr. Dobbs passed away leaving the United Neighborhood of Whitman Park members to continue his longtime commitment to the community. 2010 Closed |

Wysocki at 1313 Chase St. from 1929 through the mid 50's, they are also recorded as being at 1312 Morton St. in 1939 for some reason. they may have been around a little earlier than '29, as their oldest crowns are hand finished and will turn amethyst. The fancy embossed diamond plate crown shown dates to around 1930, earlier crowns are plainer and have a round slug plate without the embossed bird. The painted label Camden Club bottles are from the 40's, all show the same scene (supposedly the Ben Franklin bridge, but doesn't really resemble it much). The early embossed bottles are scarce, as are the 12 oz. and quart ACL bottles; the small size ACL turns up more regularly. Because of the bridge picture, the ACL bottles are in high demand nationally from painted label soda collectors and rather valuable at present. Bruce

2012 Florence Matthews Camden Courier-Post Deadly night: 4 killed, 2 hurt in Camden CAMDEN — In a deadly span of less than an hour,
two city men were shot dead in East Camden and another was fatally stabbed in the Whitman Park neighborhood on Saturday night. A fourth man died in a hit-and-run accident in the same period. In the first incident, 31-year-old Bruce Matthews was found with multiple stab wounds at Louis and Everett streets at 10:35 p.m., according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. Matthews lived in the 1300 block of Chase Street, a short distance from where he was found. |
